JV Volleyball places 2nd in Cheektowaga Tournament

Date of contest: 9/15/18

The St. Francis Red Raiders JV Volleyball team competed in a tournament in Cheektowaga this weekend. The team started off the tournament off with a loss to Kenmore West (15-25) and a loss in a hard fought overtime match against Maryvale (27-29). These two losses to start the day did not get our Red Raiders down. This only fueled the team’s fire and gave them a chance to show their great resilience as they came back with four straight wins against Kenmore East (25-11), Williamsville East (25-22), West Seneca East (25-18), and Iroquois (25-16) to finish the round robin play with a record of 4 wins and 2 losses. Hunter Nowak (Fr.) lead the team by showing off his serving skills as he at one time served for 10 straight points against West Seneca East. Hunter and Blaise Kolbert (Fr.) both went on numerous serving streaks during the day and continued to elevate their team’s play with their passing and kills. Jack Accurso (Fr.) as usual, had a great day setting and serving. Nolan Boltz (Fr.) and Jacob Markham (Fr.) did great with their scrappy heads-up play, always digging, passing and keeping it all together. Greg Jones (Fr.) had a serving streak of 8 straight points. These four straight wins propelled St. Francis into the playoffs. In the Semi Finals, St. Francis faced off against Kenmore West. During this game the team was again led by the serving of Hunter Nowak who served 9 straight points. Teddy Charlap (So.) really showed how dominant of a player he can be by leading the team in blocks and kills in the playoffs. The Red Raiders won in the Semi Finals in three games and went on to the Championship game where they lost against Maryvale giving them 2nd place in the Tournament.
