JV Football vs Cathedral Prep

Location: Hagerty Family Events Center

Date of contest: 9/28/2018

The St. Francis Red Raiders continued their winning ways with a memorable 20-14 comeback road victory over the Cathedral Prep Ramblers in Erie, PA. Cathedral Prep opened the scoring in the 1st quarter with a 51 yard TD run and a successful PAT kick giving the Ramblers an early 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, St. Francis started a 14 play drive at their own 8 yard line. The drive was helped by some strong running by RB Kimal Clark and two completion by QB Noah Workman to WR Anthony Gomez for 14 and 16 yards respectively. QB Workman then hit WR Jack Raymond for 30 yards, taking the ball from the Cathedral Prep 45 yard line down to the 15 yard line. After a pass interference call on Cathedral Prep gave St. Francis a 1st and goal from the 5 yard, the drive stalled as Cathedral Prep intercepted a pass in the end zone as the 1st half expired.

The Ramblers increased their lead to 14-0 with 3:32 remaining in the 3rd quarter with a 4 yard TD run. On the ensuing drive, St. Francis got on the board with a 28 yard TD pass from QB Noah Workman to WR Jack Raymond down the left sideline. Raymond stretched out and did a nice job to initially tip and bobble the ball, which ultimately fell into his hands and he took it into the end zone leaving the score at Cathedral Prep 14 - St. Francis 6, heading into the 4th quarter.

Midway through the 4th quarter, the Red Raiders received the spark they needed, when LB Gavin Calkins intercepted a Cathedral Prep pass and returned it 36 yards for a TD, making the score Cathedral Prep 14 – St. Francis 12.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Red Raiders special teams made a big play as Owen Flett forced a fumble which Colton Evoniuk recovered at the Cathedral Prep 24 yard line. Unfortunately the drive stalled with no score. The Red Raiders next possession started at the Cathedral Prep 30 yard line. On a 2nd down and 12 from the Cathedral Prep 17 yard line, QB Noah Workman lofted a pass into the far left corner of the end zone which was hauled in by WR Jack Raymond, giving St. Francis its first lead with only 2:06 remaining in the game. QB Workman hit RB Colton Evoniuk with a pass for the PAT, making the final score St. Francis 20 - Cathedral Prep 14.

The Red Raiders were led on defense by DB Shane Roberts with 10 tackles, including some very hard hits. DL Jack Demeo had 7 tackles, DB Anthony Gomez 6 tackles, DB Jack Raymond and LB Dylan Mack 5 tackles each, and DL Jason Lowry, DL Jaxon Mohawk and LB Conor Black pitched in with 4 tackles each.

This win for the Red Raiders completed a 3 game sweep of Pennsylvania teams (McDowell, Erie and Cathedral Prep), an accomplishment which previously had never been accomplished. To make this feat even more astounding, the Red Raiders beat Cathedral Prep after losing starting QB Jack Bestpitch to an injury in the 1st quarter, and RB Kimal Clark went down to an injury in the 3rd quarter. The Red Raiders “next man up” mantra proved successful once again.

Coach King was very proud of this entire team effort, as the team remains undefeated at 5-0.
