JV Football vs McDowell

Date of Contest:  9-1-18

The St. Francis Red Raiders opened their season at home against the McDowell Trojans (Erie, Pa.) on a sunny and hot beautiful day at Polian Family Field.  The Red Raiders played an outstanding game, defeating McDowell 14-8 with a very large crowd in attendance.

St. Francis opened the scoring in the 2nd quarter, as RB Kimal Clark ran down the right sideline for a 25 yard TD run.  QB Jack Bestpitch hit Colton Evoniuk for the 2 point conversion to give St. Francis an 8-0 halftime lead.

McDowell tied up the game in the 3rd quarter on a 50 yard TD pass, which was deflected up into the air and came down into the hands of the McDowell receiver, who then raced into the end zone.  The Trojans PAT pass was successful to tie the game at 8-8.

In the 4th quarter, the Red Raider’s defense forced a McDowell punt, which was returned by Kimal Clark, down the left sideline, 70 yards for the exciting game winning touchdown.  Several key blocks on the punt return were thrown, including one great block from Shane Roberts.

The Red Raider offense was led by QB Jack Bestpitch who threw with outstanding accuracy in completing 13 of 18 passes for 113 yards.  WR Jack Raymond had 4 catches for 48 yards and WR Anthony Gomez pitched in with 3 catches for 43 yards. RB Kimal Clark ran the ball 14 times for 89 yards, including the 25 yard TD run.

The Red Raider defense played an outstanding game.  A key defensive play came in the 1st half, when DB Shane Roberts broke up what looked to be a certain McDowell TD pass with a jarring hit, forcing the McDowell receiver to drop the pass in the end zone.   The jarring hit seemed to set the tempo for the proud Red Raider defense.  DB Jack Raymond also had a key 4th quarter interception, which he returned 28 yards to the McDowell 37 yard line.   DL Jack Demeo and Jason Lowry lead the defense with 4 tackles each.

Congratulations to the Red Raider JV football team for very solid performance to start the season.
